Every year during hop harvest, our brewmaster Matt Brynildson travels across the world meeting with hop farmers, eager to discover the latest hop crops. From some of our favorite hops like Amarillo and Cascade to newer varietals like Strata and Sabro, hop harvest is the best time for our brew team to discover which flavors are attributed to what hops.

For the past few years, we have been brewing single-hop beers at The Propagator, our research & development brewery in Venice, California.  Focusing on one hop allows the beer to really showcase the notes of that specific hop, and it also allows our brewers to really understand the exact flavor profile that hop has to offer and what beers that hop could be a great addition to in future beers.

Explosive flavors purely through hops and malts.

From tropical aromas to notes of coconut, pine, peach, or citrus, each hop has its own signature flavor which is what adds to the great taste of our beers. For example, our revolving IPA, Luponic Distortion, has been an avenue for our brew team to showcase blends of these hops that really hone in on those specific flavors, but a single-hop beer really allows your senses to understand what the true characteristics of that particular hop are. These beers set the pace for what’s next from Firestone Walker: Explosive flavors purely through hops and malts.

First up is Motueka, a hazy IPA. Motueka is a New Zealand-grown hop that delivers punchy flavors of tropical fruit, white grape and lemon zest. We have used this hop in our Luponic Distortion series, including the new current release out new, as well as in the dry-hopping stage on past Luponics. This was a specific hop that had such interesting flavors that our brewmaster fell in love with, so new we had to highlight it in our beers somehow.

Next is El Dorado, a west coast IPA. El Dorado is a next-generation hop variety from the Pacific Northwest that offers soft stone fruit flavors with notes of tropical melon and pear. This hop is used in hazy beers such as Mind Haze and Flyjack.

Both of these beers are only available in our Mixed 12 Packs for a limited time until we rotate to other single-hop IPAs throughout the year.
